Many dogs have winter apparel to keep them warm. Our pug, Sheldon, had a whole drawer to himself of body warmers - not fun dog outfits, purely body warmers! We found an online store from the USA that has matching pyjama pants and dog body warmer, but nothing in South Africa. Not only was the price and shipping cost of the apparel combined was a fortune, the material was not warm at all. This prompted us to decide we wanted to be able to have South Africans enjoy this too!
Unfortunately, COVID put a halt on the idea many of those involved in our new venture were impacted by the pandemic. At the same time, we realised that "COVID pets" - the pets adopted during lockdown for comfort - now struggled with separation anxiety when their humans went to work. This started our vision as running a doggy daycare and boarding. When winter came, we noticed how many of our dogs arrived with body warmers and realised it was time to get Barks Closet officially started!
We used our experience with different sized dogs (including Lucky Packet pooches), our dog training certifications, and dog behaviourist studies to work on sizing and where their bodies feel more comfortable based on their genetic make up. Comfort is what we strive for!
